A mention is a way to tag a person right inside your text. It links to their profile and lets them know you're talking to them, so the right people see what you wrote.
Where to find it: Use the @ sign while writing any post, comment, or channel message.
Tag a person
- Start writing a post, a comment, or a message in a group channel.
- Type @ and a few letters of their name. A short list of matching people appears; pick the right one and we insert the link for you.
- Finish your sentence and post as usual.
Once you post, the name turns into a link to that person's profile, and they get a notification telling them you mentioned them.
In a group channel, the list shows members of that group. This works on the website and in the app.
Pick from the list
In a post or a comment, only a name you pick from the list becomes a mention, and it reaches exactly the person you picked. A name typed by hand stays plain text. In a post, nobody is notified for it. In a group's comments and channel messages, a typed name still reaches the member with exactly that name, and it ends at the first character that is not an English letter, a digit or an underscore: @Ann O'Brien typed by hand reaches a member named Ann. If you change a mention's text afterwards, it goes back to plain text too; type @ again and pick. To check someone's exact name, open the People page: click More in the left sidebar, then Friends, or on a phone, tap Search and find Friends under Browse.
