Your inbox

A short ranked list of what deserves you next, plus the full notification list.

Your inbox is a short list of what happened while you were away, put in order by trust rather than by clock. Things you need to answer come first, then things from people and topics you trust. You can clear it in a minute.

Where to find it: Tap the inbox icon in the top bar, or go straight to your inbox. The icon shows a small count when you have unread items.

Reading the list

Every row says who it came from and, in gray, why it reached you. You will see reasons like reply to you, mentioned you, asked near your topics, from someone you trust, in a topic you follow, and new conversation near you. Some of them name the topic that matched.

Click a row to open the post or comment it points at. Opening it marks it read and takes it off the list. Once the list is empty you get You're caught up. and, if we have a good one, a single unread post from the archive under Something to read.

What reaches the ranked list

Four kinds of thing, and nothing else.

  • Replies and mentions on your posts and comments. These come first.
  • Questions people have asked in topics near yours
  • Posts from someone you trust, or in a topic you follow
  • A new conversation rising near you

Everything else

Invites and RSVPs, reactions, bridge activity, vouches, new subscribers, and direct messages stay off the ranked list on purpose. Use All notifications at the top right to see them. That page keeps an Unread view, tabs for one kind at a time, and Mark all read. Nothing is dropped, only held back.

Want fewer alerts?

You decide what reaches you and how. See Notification settings. The mobile app shows the full notification list rather than the ranked one.
