Letter to the MMS people-for feedback (more in comments)
Hey y’all, writing with my UpTrust hat on— Thank you for being our first guinea pigs! The data and feedback was helpful—highlighting things we hadn’t seen or thought of, catching bugs, validating and translating ideas, and generally seeing through your eyes. Thank you.... Dogfood noticings jan 29
Team has improved a bunch of stuff already, nice work! (such as all the inbox stuff i mentioned in last week’s @dogfood noticings) I really like the new front page in the middle, I know it’s not our priority but these small UI things make a big difference for me I want to be... Process-local named pipes: a wish for more secure program composition in Linux
I was trying to wrap ssh-keygen so that it only outputs a private key on stdout. One constraint I’m working with is to do so as securely as possible.... Did anyone have a system with the compromised xz binary on it?
We were super lucky someone stumbled upon this so early that the blast radius was rather small. I didn’t have any systems with it installed. What about y’all? Also, I’d like to use this platform to say, this got caught because of open source.... I’m not opposed to the idea in general. My main UX concern is adding too many buttons and which users ignore. Implementation-wise, I’m wondering how the system determines which topic scores to display.... - b_b...
Inbox view proposal/request for feedback
I’m supposed to put this on basecamp too, probably, but since I’m here I’ll put it here first. I’m envisioning we could maybe quickly and easily have another view (in addition to the current home page, and in addition to the imagined twitter-ish view) based on our current Inbox.... How much control do we have over the relative times
There are numerous posts on this across the internet, but by and large the central design of these does not mimic what humans expect. For instance, 2 weeks ago is anywhere from 7.00000001 to 14 days.... Adobe Photoshop 1.0 is source available (it's written in Pascal!)
Hacker News discussion GitHub mirror of source code I mentioned this to a couple of you recently. I incorrectly believed that the source code release was recent. It actually happened 11 years ago! Reading through the code, I was surprised by how "modern" Pascal seemed.... I’m really into the idea of dogfooding; I expect it to help us figure things out quickly (I’m a bit vague on what exactly would improve, though). I’m also worried that dogfooding would have us spend too much time on "stuff that ends up being polish" / "typical" web app features... I think we can have it all. If we capture our various patterns and abstractions for the frontend in Haskell code, we can hide Tailwind from our frontend developers almost completely while making sure that our styles are consistent across our UI components.... I’m a bit skeptical that we can keep going indefinitely using Haskell-guys to do UI. UI can be a ton of work, and most Haskell people seem to not want to spend that much time on UI things, since they’re not as interesting as backend....
