Daily Alchemy: Can we make this controversy good?

“What obligation does Cloudflare have to preserve VoidZero's open-source tooling after acquisition?”

    The algorithm is extremely simple at the moment:

    activity = voteCount + (10 * numComments)

    then there are thresholds for how many bars to show.

    Yep! We killed live updating of comment trees after MMS feedback as a stopgap measure, and we haven’t sorted out what to replace it with.

    I agree, and it’s one of the things I’ve been ignoring because it falls in the "make it like Reddit / Hacker News" bin (I really moderate my "make a good discussion forum" instinct for reasons that I’ll unpack on request)....

    Noticed today that more things are updating ~immediately–cool! Also noticed that home page score and comment counts don’t seem to update quickly. If I vote up a post from the post page, and comment on it on the post page, then go back to the home page, that post won’t have...

    There’s something about the default UI of "comment on this post" box which I haven’t been talking about because i know we made it bigger after our first use of that platform, we dont have a UX person yet, and it didn’t seem too important, but keeps bugging me, so I want to go...

    I’m opposed to time-based styling for these. This is a little from a personal dislike of time varying UX. This is mostly from me imagining diving back into a big thread after, say, two years, and not really remembering exactly where I was interacting at the time and not being...

    I didn’t think too much about the colour when I added the own content styles, the main goal at the time was to plumb in something that made a user’s content visually distinct.

    I think we can have it all. If we capture our various patterns and abstractions for the frontend in Haskell code, we can hide Tailwind from our frontend developers almost completely while making sure that our styles are consistent across our UI components....

    are you guys going to be doing the implementation or are UI people It will almost certainly be us. Tailwind is concerned with the code that we write when building the UI, not the look and feel of the UI....

    I know this is a hacker news clone but I don’t love the "title" "URL" "Content" interface for the initial post. I’d rather have it be like Facebook, Twitter, or Youtube comments. I’m curious what others think about this....

    The main benefit I derive from Tailwind is its discoverability. It seems easier to figure out how to do something with Tailwind than with plain CSS, and I think that’s mostly due to the information architecture of the docs and the library itself....

    Personally, I also dislike Tailwind. I’m young enough to be in the demographic that digs it, but I’m a big "OG world wide web" fan. I think most web sites, including this one, fit well within the original interlinked documents / "hypertext" paradigm....

    The list of comments on a profile page don’t have enough context, ie. they don’t say what topic those comments exist under or what they are replying to.
