Recently I was telling some people about UpTrust and they were like, "so basically profit maximization sucks right?" and i was like, "profit maximization’s just one output of a much larger thing, which is our unconsciousness.... There is definitely a conflation with facts vs opinions between "I trust this info" and I "I personally like this." I also think a crushing majority don’t really know the difference and will "trust" things they want/hope are true, rather than what they bet is true.... In rationalist circles we call this "tabbooing" – someone will say a sentence that includes some word that’s ambiguous or overloaded or contentious or triggering or something, like "blah blah NIMBYs!," and the person listening will say "tabboo NIMBY?" which means "say exactly... We’re already doing this, to a large extent. Drawing on our own principles for what’s right/good and not caving to external pressure.
